Maria and Tony of West Side Story may be back onto the big screen soon thanks to Steven Spielberg, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Spielberg mentioned that he wanted to do the remake in a 2014 Good Morning America interview. “Well you know something, ‘West Side Story’ is one of my favorite Broadway musicals and one of the greatest pieces of musical literature, my goodness, one of the greatest scores and some of the greatest lyrics ever written for a musical so just let me put it this way: it’s on my mind,” he said.
The Hollywood Reporter also reports that Tony Kushner—of Angels in America and Lincoln—is working on a script for the film after Spielberg was finally able to get the rights to the play (he tried 15 years ago, too). The original Broadway play began its run on in 1957 and won two Tony Awards. It was adapted into a film in 1961—and that won 10 Oscars.
