Last weekend’s annual Record Store Day (which was on Saturday), was the event’s biggest ever. According to Nielsen Soundcan, sales at indie record stores were up 91% compared to the previous weekend, and 11% higher than last year’s big day. Independent stores represented almost 20% of all physical album sales last week, and vinyl sales at the stores were up a staggering 280% compared to the previous week. In a statement, Nielsen Entertainment Senior VP David Bakula said, “Record Store Day keeps shining the spotlight on the experience that independent record stores uniquely bring to music fans … It has become a major music event that compels artists to deliver premium content and drives music consumers to independent record stores” …
