Last night, at least 48 Sunni militants were killed in or around Baghdad as a full-on sectarian war threatens to descend on the fragile nation. Some 170 armed U.S. troops have been deployed to protect the U.S. Embassy in Iraq, but President Barack Obama has said they will not directly engage. The President has said that the U.S. will not help Iraqi soldiers unless Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Malaki can come up with a plan to end sectarian violence. In the meantime, the U.S. is said to be considering diplomatic talks with Iran as a way to assist Iraq’s looming war.
