I don’t get into much heavy rock and roll these days, I associate a lot of hard rock with my junior high years. But every now and then, a band comes along who I could head-bang to for old times’ sake.
Colour Revolt have been around for a few years, and they’ve steadilly been building momentum towards becoming a respectable hard rock band. “Respectable” in that they don’t ease up on the heavy guitar riffs, but bring forth a meaningful message to their listeners. I enjoyed my first Colour Revolt show this weekend at the Subterranean in Chicago, and I came away in the end feeling like I had experienced pure grunge. Colour Revolt is murky, dark, and loud. They’re not radio-friendly, nor are they interested in being so. This defiance of label systems might be the only clear message that blares through their muddy alternative rock. (except for that lyric on Naked and Red, “Eden, Eden, Eden is a hell of a place.” [rock fist!])
