Who’s a good boy? Who is, one might say, too good of a boy? Gavel, that’s who. Big things were expected of the German Shepherd, who was the newest, freshest and fuzziest member of the police canine academy in Queensland, Australia. “Gavel comes from a long line of pedigree,” read an initial press release. “If the family bloodline is anything to go by, in 16 months Gavel will be tracking and catching criminals as a proud member of the Queensland Dog Squad!”
Well, family bloodline ain’t everything, it seems, because Gavel is cursed with the enviable personality flaw of being just too sweet. He loves strangers, meeting new people and playing with his pals. The police department was forced to flunk poor Gavel out, on account of the fact that he “did not display the necessary aptitude for a life on the front line.”
We can assume that Gavel cares about justice, but would prefer to make the world a better place in other ways than serving on the front lines of Queensland’s crime fighting unit.
And that’s just what he’s going to do. Never fear, Gavel isn’t on the street. Paul de Jersey AC is the governor of Queensland, and he’s taking Gavel is as his new pal and the Vice-Regal Dog. Not totally sure all of what that position will entail, but “welcoming visitors” was mentioned on the governor’s Facebook page, which seems right up Gavel’s alley. Just look at the little guy.
So congratulations to Gavel on his new job. May we all learn from Gavel’s ability to recognize when a career just isn’t working out, and move onto bigger and better things.
