Gasoline is a lot more than just a way to get out of the house. For a lot of people, gas is a job, daycare, community, food and livelihood. That’s why while soaring gas prices might be a headache to some, but can be a literal matter of life and death for others. And fortunately, some churches are stepping up to meet the need.
In Louisville, Pastor J. Garland Smith of Lone Wa Worship Center in Monroe was able to provide $25 gas cards for the first 200 takers at his church’s parking lot. Smith said he ran out of gift cards in less than an hour, but members of the congregation chipped in to make sure nobody who showed up left without a full tank.
They’re just one of many churches that are showing up for their community with ways to get gas to people who need it. Mosaic Church in Danville, Illinois gave out 110 free gas cards while a church in Decatur handed out 400. In Omaha, Nebraska, Salem Baptist Church handed out plenty as well.
“Our commitment is to this community and to make sure that they know that we are there for them, that we love them and that we support them,” Salem Baptist’s minister of music Ananias Montague told local reporters.
