Boko Haram Wants to Team with ISIS

The terrorist organization Boko Haram—the group responsible for a campaign of abductions, village raids, mass murders and bombings in Nigeria—wants to team up with ISIS. This weekend, the group’s leader posted a message online, proclaiming, “We announce our allegiance to the caliph … and will hear and obey in times of difficulty and prosperity. We call on Muslims everywhere to pledge allegiance to the caliph.” The group rose to the international spotlight this summer after abducting more than 200 schoolgirls in a brazen attack on a village, but their years-long campaign of violence has left thousands dead in the region.

Like ISIS, Boko Haram is known for their extreme brutality and violent land-grabs. They routinely burn churches, indiscriminately murder residents and carry out suicide bombings. This weekend alone, a series of five bombings in Nigeria, believed to be the work of Boko Haram, killed at least 50 people. The news comes as both Islamic militant groups are increasingly on the defensive: Troops from Chad and Niger launched a new offensive against Boko Haram on Sunday, and a coalition of nations are engaged in a military campaign against ISIS in Syria and Iraq …
