Comedian Matt Rife surprised everyone when he shared that he got baptized earlier this year.
“I got baptized in August,” Rife said on the History Hyenas podcast, “in a dude’s pool.”
Rife, known more for his raunchy comedy than religious commentary, opened up about his decision to hosts Yannis Papas and Chris Distefano, saying that he didn’t grow up in a religious household, but would occasionally attend church with friends a few times a year. Then when his grandpa died two years ago, he began thinking about God more and more.
“I’ve never been a super religious person, but when my grandpa passed away, something hit me that I was like, ‘I’ll never see this person again,'” he said. “So something has to exist. I skew Christian, so I started going to church a little bit more.”
However, Rife doesn’t seem to be entirely thrilled with attending church, but he’s willing to push on.
“I hate church; I find it excruciatingly boring,” he said. “But I want to believe in God, and it’s obviously a huge part of the process.”
