Spain Is Holding a Competitive Napping Tournament, and Count Us In

In a world where we celebrate competitive eating, competitive tag and even competitive Excel spreadsheets (yes, that’s real), it’s about time someone made napping a sport. And naturally, Spain is leading the charge.

The National Siesta Championship is a real competition held in Spain, where sleepy hopefuls recline on blue sofas and battle it out for the ultimate prize: €1,000 for being the best at sleeping. That’s right. While the rest of us struggle through midday meetings fueled by cold brew and sheer willpower, these competitors take the nap of their lives—and get paid for it.

The rules are simple: Competitors must achieve peak nap performance in just 20 minutes. Judges track factors like speed of falling asleep, quality of rest and—because this is Spain—snoring style. If you’re out cold within moments, congrats, you’re basically an Olympian. If you just lie there scrolling TikTok? You, like the rest of us, are a failure.

The whole thing started back in 2010 as an effort to preserve Spain’s beloved siesta culture, which has been threatened by, you know, capitalism. And while science backs the benefits of a good power nap—improving metabolism, mental clarity and overall well-being—modern life makes it nearly impossible to do without getting fired. Spain, however, refuses to go down without a (sleepy) fight.
