Chipotle Warns That Global Warming May Mean No More Guacamole

As you probably know, guacamole costs extra at Chipotle. And it’s going to keep costing you extra, and might even start costing you more, because of global warming. Is there anything climate change isn’t ruining? Can’t we at least keep our precious guacamole? Evidently not, according to ThinkProgress.

“Increasing weather volatility or other long-term changes in global weather patterns, including any changes associated with global climate change, could have a significant impact on the price or availability of some of our ingredients,” the popular chain, whose Sofritas vegan tofu dish recently went national, said in its annual report released last month. “In the event of cost increases with respect to one or more of our raw ingredients we may choose to temporarily suspend serving menu items, such as guacamole or one or more of our salsas, rather than paying the increased cost for the ingredients.”…

Thanks, Chipotle. To recap the day’s news in food: meat and cheese are bad for you and guacamole might be going away. Hope everyone likes tofu …

Update: First of all, Chipotle has named this the “guacapocalypse,” which we wish we’d thought of. Second, they say it’s a little overstated. Company spokesperson Chris Arnold said that it was routine disclosure of all potential risk factors but that he “wouldn’t read too much into this.” So, we’re safe. For now.
