Giving is Going Up—Just Not to Churches

Americans are getting generous again. In 2014, charitable donations in the United States surpassed records set before the 2007 recession. Americans gave $358 billion last year—a whopping $47 billion more than the previous record. Curiously though, giving to religious organizations is down. While faith-based recipients remain the largest portion of all U.S. donations (32 percent in 2014), that percentage is dramatically shrinking. In 1987, 53 percent of all U.S. donations went to religious organizations and institutions.
