Harvard Students Canceled Their Black Mass Event at the Last Minute

The Harvard Extension School’s Cultural Studies Club canceled their widely publicized “black mass” event just hours before it was scheduled to be preformed last night. Unsurprisingly, leading up to the planned event—which is traditionally conducted to mock the Catholic church—the club and university (which had nothing to do with organizing or sponsoring it), faced widespread criticism. Along with an outcry from fellow students, concerned alumni and the Archdiocese of Boston, the school’s president, Drew Faust released a statement saying, “the decision by a student club to sponsor an enactment of this ritual is abhorrent.” Apparently, after the club announced that they would move the event to an off-campus location, they couldn’t secure a new venue (it’s just so hard to book a last-minute black mass in Boston these days) and ended up just pulling the plug altogether …
