In the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, Heritage USA was a popular resort and theme park, founded by Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker.
The televangelists, known for their show The PTL Club (short for “praise the Lord”), had a vision to build a “Christian Disneyland” with hotels, rides and even a waterpark.
However, after high profile personal and financial scandals, the park ended up closing. ABC News’ 20/20 recently did a story on the park, and released this look at the area today as a special segment.
The story of the park is still a surreal chapter in Christian culture history.
