Illinois Legalizes Same-Sex Marriage

Last night, Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn signed legislation to make same-sex marriage legal throughout the state. With the passage of the new law, Illinois becomes the 16th state to legalize same-sex marriage. The measure faced stiff opposition from some religious leaders in the state, who took part in campaigns to try to convince lawmakers to not pass the bill. The measure, which needed 60 votes in the Illinois House to advance earlier this month, was passed on a 61-54 vote. Speaking to an audience gathered at the University of Illinois where he signed it into law, Gov. Quinn his goal with the legislation was to make sure “Illinois does not have a situation where individuals are discriminated against in any way when it comes to love and marriage” …
