More than 3,600 Killed after Massive Earthquake in Nepal

A large earthquake and a series of aftershocks has killed at least 3,600 people in Nepal, injuring at least 6,300 more. Tens of thousands are now without homes or shelter as the government of the small, impoverished country begs the international community to help its residents. This weekend’s 7.8-magnitude earthquake was the largest to hit the country in nearly eight decades. The earthquake struck near the country’s largest city Kathmandu, destroying large factories, ancient temples and countless homes.

The government’s chief secretary and rescue coordinator told reporters, “We are appealing for tents, dry goods, blankets, mattresses, and 80 different medicines … that we desperately need now. We don’t have the helicopters that we need or the expertise to rescue the people trapped.” Organizations including CARE, WorldVision, The Red Cross and many others are currently orchestrating aid efforts and are seeking further donations to help the people effected by this massive disaster …
