And So It Begins: Florida Gov. Ron Desantis to Speak at Liberty University Convocation

We all figured it was coming, but now it’s official: Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is headed to Liberty University.

That’s right, the Florida governor will be the keynote speaker at the Christian school’s convocation on Friday, April 14.

Of course, this isn’t Liberty’s first rodeo when it comes to hosting high-profile political speakers. For decades, a speaking gig at Liberty has been a vital step in many political figures’ national aspirations, particularly ones appealing to a conservative audience. In many ways, Liberty has served as a “king-maker” for candidates like former President Donald Trump.

In fact, Liberty’s role in aiding Trump during his political campaign was highlighted in last year’s Hulu documentary, God Forbid, which connected former Liberty President Jerry Falwell Jr. to various political figures.

DeSantis, who has served as Florida’s governor since 2019, is widely regarded as a potential Republican presidential candidate for the 2024 election. Though he hasn’t yet made an official announcement that he’s running for president, this certainly seems like a big step in that direction.

Liberty’s interim president Jerry Prevo said, “As a university that is committed to training champions for Christ with academic excellence, it is important for our students to hear from some of the nation’s top influential leaders who are committed to the Christian faith while serving in the public square.”
