Former national security adviser Mike Flynn is seeking immunity against “unfair prosecution” in exchange for testifying about the Trump’s campaigns alleged ties to Russia, according to Flynn’s lawyer.
The Wall Street Journal first reported that Flynn has reached out to both the FBI and Congress looking to strike a deal.
“General Flynn certainly has a story to tell, and he very much wants to tell it, should the circumstances permit,” his attorney Robert Kelner confirmed in a statement.
So, what does that mean? Well, it’s hard to say.
Flynn himself told Meet the Press in September of last year that “When you are given immunity, that means you probably committed a crime.” He was referring to reports that Hillary Clinton’s aides had been granted immunity to talk about her private email server.
But of course, his words there weren’t exactly prophetic, as courts eventually found no cause to prosecute Clinton, immunity or otherwise. That means that seeking immunity doesn’t necessarily mean anyone committed a crime, and Flynn’s hunt for a deal shouldn’t necessarily be taken as an admission of wrongdoing.
That said, it’s another headache for the Trump Administration, and the President himself took to Twitter this morning to weigh in.
