The New Miss America Is an Outrage to Racists Everywhere

If you didn’t know about the Miss America pageant, don’t fret. The competition isn’t quite the news maelstrom that it used to be. However, last night’s selection of Nina Davuluri is becoming a news story, largely on account of the fact that her selection has infuriated America’s still sadly vocal legions of racists. She’s Indian-American—the first to ever win the pageant—and that was enough to send racists into a tizzy. Despite that fact that Nina was born and raised in exotic Syracuse, New York, some racists had a hard time comprehending how this Miss America pageant had crowned an “Arab” (this reveals a tenuous grasp of geography, one of racism’s trademarks), and so close to 9/11 too. For her part, the new Miss America is taking it all with a lot of class. “I have to rise above that,” she told AP. “I always viewed myself as first and foremost American.” She went on to say, “I’m thankful there are children watching at home who can finally relate to a new Miss America.” And what’s more American than that? …
