Just weeks after a black student at Duke University said that several white students chanted a song about lynching directed at her, the school is investigating another disturbing incident: Late last night, a noose was found hanging from a tree on campus. University officials have launched an investigation. Vice President for Student Affairs Larry Moneta sent an email to the student body, saying, “To whomever committed this hateful and stupid act, I just want to say that if your intent was to create fear, it will have the opposite effect.” The events on the Duke campus come after several other incidents of racism at major universities, including members of a fraternity at the University of Oklahoma chanting about lynching and using racial slurs.
