Police in Ferguson arrested 23 people last night during large protests, one night after a man was critically injured when he reportedly opened fire on officers. Sunday night marked the anniversary of the death of unarmed teen Michael Brown, who was shot and killed by a police officer following a confrontation last summer. The arrests last night happened when officers wearing riot gear attempted to clear the streets. Though police say that some in the crowd threw items at officers, there were no reports of injuries or property damage.
The night also saw the emergence of a group of five, heavily-armed white men calling themselves “The Oath Keepers” who, ironically, claimed they were there to keep things peaceful. Police did not appreciate their presence, calling them “both unnecessary and inflammatory.” The group claims to be made up of service members, first responders and veterans.
