Even though Syrian officials agreed to destroy their massive stockpiles of chemical weapons more than a year ago, a disturbing new report from a watchdog agency found evidence that mustard gas was used as recently as August. The report, provided to Reuters from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, determined that at least two individuals “were exposed to sulfur mustard” during a clash between ISIS and another rebel group. It is unclear who used the gas or where they got it. Then report tragically also notes, “It is very likely that the effects of sulfur mustard resulted in the death of a baby.” A sourced told Reuters that there are increasing fears that ISIS may have found a stockpile or even figured out how to make the deadly chemical weapons themselves. The use of mustard gas is a violation of international law. Another recent report, which looked at evidence from this spring, also found that the forces of Syrian President Assad may have also used “one or more toxic chemicals.”
