Report: The CIA Misled Gov. about Severity of ‘Enhanced Interrogation’

A new 6,300 page report from the Senate Intelligence Committee has found that the CIA intentionally misled government officials about their harsh interrogation tactics and the program’s overall effectiveness. According to this story from The Washington Post, the CIA’s methods of torturing prisoners involved in terrorism cases in secret prisons often led to no significant new information. The report found that in many cases, the CIA exaggerated the importance of certain prisoners and made lawmakers believe that “enhanced interrogation” was responsible for obtaining critical information even though often it was not. A U.S. official familiar with the report told The Washington Post, “The CIA described [its program] repeatedly both to the Department of Justice and eventually to Congress as getting unique, otherwise unobtainable intelligence that helped disrupt terrorist plots and save thousands of lives.
