Science has now confirmed something we’ve all suspected for a long time: junk food is as addictive as drugs. A team of neuroscience researchers at Connecticut College did an experiment involving lab rats, giving them both Oreo cookies and injections of cocaine or morphine. Their findings showed that the cookie “activates more neurons in the brain’s ‘pleasure center'” than the drugs. Researcher Joseph Schroeder told The Today Show, “These findings suggest that high fat/sugar foods and drugs of abuse trigger brain addictive processes to the same degree and lend support to the hypothesis that maladaptive eating behaviors contributing to obesity can be compared to drug addiction.” Interestingly, the researchers found that the Oreo-addicted rats also eat the cream first.
