Remember in 2016 when the Internet came together in one of the greatest moments of democracy to name a UK submarine Boaty McBoatface? Well, it turns out it’s actually been making some important scientific discoveries around climate change.
On Saturday, the robot submarine completed a 55-day mission at sea, traveling more than 1,200 miles from the UK to Iceland to hunt for marine snow — tiny particles that sink to the ocean floor and store huge amounts of carbon. Scientists have shared this data could change what is known about the pace of climate change.
Who knew when the Internet named the submarine as a joke, years later it would be doing significant scientific work? What a world we live in.
