
Days after demonstrators marched in two South Carolina cities to protest the state’s use of the Confederate flag at the capitol building, lawmakers will hold a special session to discuss the issue. Shooting suspect Dylan Roof was openly racist, and posed for pictures with the Confederate flag online before murdering nine people at a historic black church in Charleston. The local government’s use of the symbol has long been controversial. Gov. Nikki Haley is expected to make a formal statement this afternoon about the flag, and the legislature has scheduled a special session for tomorrow to debate whether or not the state should continue to fly the controversial symbol which has been displayed on at State House grounds for more than 50 years.
