Earlier this month, Brazilian street artist Paulo Ito created this stirring image on the outside of a schoolhouse, depicting a starving young boy with only a soccer ball to eat. In the weeks since, the painting has gone viral online and been a major subject of commentary in the Brazilian media. Ito told Slate that his work isn’t meant to be political or an indictment against a specific leader, but is a criticism of modern society in the country: Poverty levels are still extremely high in Brazil, where nearly a billion dollars are being spend in preparation for the upcoming World Cup Games.
