Supreme Court: Texas Abortion Law to Stay in Place for Now

The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that Texas’ recently-passed law that effectively closed many of the state’s abortion clinics can stay in place for the time being. The nation’s highest court was asked to decide if the new laws could be suspended until after the Fifth Circuit Court ruled on an appeal scheduled for January. The law, which contains several new policies that make access to abortion much more restrictive, came under the national spotlight following a filibuster attempt by Sen. Wendy Davis last summer. In a statement following the ruling, Texas Gov. Rick Perry said, “This is good news both for the unborn and for the women of Texas, who are now better protected from shoddy abortion providers operating in dangerous conditions. As always, Texas will continue doing everything we can to protect the culture of life in our state” …
