After claiming that reports of a chemical weapons attack that killed hundreds was “absolutely baseless”, President Bashar Assad’s military bombed the same area in the suburbs of Damascus. Yesterday, horrific videos and images from the region showed hundreds of victims (including many children) of an apparent gas attack. According to witnesses, because of a lack of electricity, many of the bodies were buried later that day in mass graves. This morning, it’s been reported that military officials conducted air raids on the same area—a region also used as a stronghold for anti-Assad rebels. UNICEF has issued a statement, saying, “Such horrific acts should be a reminder to all the parties and all who have influence on them that this terrible conflict has gone on far too long and children have suffered more than enough. Children must be protected, and those who fail to protect them will be held accountable” …
