Taco Bell, always the food innovator, has given us what we didn’t know we needed: the Naked Chicken Chalupa with a shell made of fried chicken.
Taco Bell said the chicken shell is 4 ounces of white-meat chicken and Mexican spices contorted into a shell shape. The chalupa has lettuce, tomato, cheese and avocado ranch—no chicken because the shell takes care of that.
This obviously surpasses KFC’s Double Down sandwich, which had buns made out of fried chicken.
According to BusinessWire, the chalupa did very well in test markets in both 2015 and 2016 in Bakersfield, California and Kansas City, Missouri.
In a press release, Taco Bell acknowledged that not everyone will understand the Naked Chicken Chalupa:
Something this delicious yet different is bound to ruffle some feathers; some might even cluck their tongues at it. However, we feel confident that once our fans get a taste of the Naked Chicken Chalupa they are going to understand exactly why this is our next big, fun and craveable innovation, following in the footsteps of the Doritos Locos Tacos five years ago and the Quesalupa just last year.
The chalupa will be in stores around the country on Jan. 26 for $2.99 and can be made into a combo.
