There Is Little Hope for Syrian Peace Talks

In an interview with The Daily Beast, the negotiator for the Syrian Opposition Coalition said that due to recent actions by the regime of President Bashar al-Assad, the Syrian peace talks are effectively dead. Though the first two rounds of talks between government representatives and opposition leaders in Geneva achieved very little, the international community remained hopefull that a future third round could see progress. The negotiator told The Daily Beast that if the government is moving forward with plans to hold elections with Assad “This would kill the Geneva process itself. [UN Lakhdar envoy] Brahimi shares this position… The State Department shares with us and Brahimi that position.” With fighting happening throughout the nation—and widening gulf opening between the two sides—an end to conflict is unfortunately unlikely any time soon.
