In case you were wondering whether or not Sudan had righted things, reconciled differences between warring factions and begun working together for the mutual good of their citizens while your back was turned, that has most certainly not happened—and, in fact, things look very grim. The government, led by internationally indicted war criminals President Omar al-Bashir and Governor Ahmed Haroun, has taken to bombing a refugee camp in the Nuba Mountains of southern Sudan. The result is half a million people displaced, by the UN’s count, but the rebels remain nonviolent. They’ve chosen instead to photograph and film the government’s atrocities, hoping to bring their own humanitarian crisis to the world’s attention through the visual power of their own misery.
