A Third American Missionary Is Being Treated for Ebola

Another Christian missionary working for SIM USA—the same Christian missions organization that Nancy Writebol was working with when she became ill with the virus—has contracted Ebola while helping to deliver babies in a Liberian hospital. Dr. Richard Sacra is the third American Christian missionary—along with Writebol and Dr. Kent Brantly from Samaritan’s Purse—to be diagnosed with the virus that has killed more than 1,500 people in West Africa. Writebol and Brantly have fully recovered after receiving treatment in the United States. According to The Boston Globe, Sacra has worked in the country for nearly 20 years, and “was not treating Ebola patients but working in an obstetrics ward” when he first became sick. He’s currently being treated in a Monrovia hospital.

His wife, who is in the U.S., issued a statement saying, “Rick would want me to urge you to remember that there are many people in Liberia who are suffering in this epidemic, and others who are not receiving standard health care because clinics and hospitals have been forced to close. West Africa is on the verge of a humanitarian crisis and the world needs to respond compassionately and generously” …
