U.N. to Discuss Ways to Decrease Number of People Living in Extreme Poverty

Starting this week, political leaders will be conducting a series of meetings at the U.N. to discuss new targets of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) first set in 2000. One of their primary goals will be issuing a challenge to nations around the world to lower the number of people living in extreme poverty—subsisting on less than $1.25 a day—by a billion people by the year 2030. The original MDG goal of cutting the number of people living in poverty in half was reached five years early, but the U.N. believes that in order to meet the 2030 anti-poverty goal, new education, health and economic measures must be undertaken.

Despite the global success in meeting the initial goal for beginning to eliminate extreme poverty, other MDGs, like dramatically cutting infant mortality rates, furthering access to medication to people living with HIV and enforcing protective measures for environmental resources, have still not been met.
