U.N. Report: 93,000 People Have Been Killed in Syrian Conflict

According to a new report from the U.N., 93,000 people have been killed in Syria since the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad first began in 2011. An estimated 30,000 deaths—at the rate of 5,000 per month—have occurred since November of last year. The report says that though 80 percent of the deaths in the conflict are believed to be men, hundreds of children have also been killed as they are frequently used as human shields. The United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights has called for a ceasefire in the region. OHCHR head Navi Pillay told the BBC, “States with influence could, if they act collectively, do a lot more to bring the conflict to a swift end, thereby saving countless more lives … Civilians are bearing the brunt of widespread, violent and often indiscriminate attacks which are devastating whole swathes of major towns and cities, as well as outlying villages” …
