The U.S. Capitol is in lockdown following reports of shots fired outside of it. Kate Nocera, a Buzzfeed reporter on Capitol Hill, is saying she was dragged inside by police, who now have the area on lockdown. We’ll be updating here as news becomes available …
Update 1: House activity is on hold, but there are reports that the shooter is in custody. Also, there’s a helicopter on the White House lawn.
Update 2: Senator Harry Reid is telling CNN that at least one person has been injured in the shootings—possibly a police officer.
Update 3: Of note: The capitol police dealing with this shooting are not getting paid next week.
Update 4: There are various reports that a car attempted to burst through the Capitol gates and, failing that, sped away. Police gave chase and, once the vehicle was cornered, shots started ringing out.
Update 5: ABC is reporting that shooting subject is a female who is dead on the scene. She may have had a child with her in the vehicle who is being taken to a hospital for injuries.
Update 6: About 30 minutes after it started, the AFP reports that the Capitol lockdown is over.
Update 7: Capitol police have confirmed to NBC that the shooter is dead.
