Waffle House Forces Waitress to Give Back Thousand-Dollar Tip

Waffle House isn’t exactly known as a bastion of quality food or anything. It’s better known for being reliably open, and also for having waffles. And now it can also be known for refusing tips. Or, at least, that’s what happened at a Waffle House in North Carolina, when Shaina Brown was given the tip of a lifetime on Mother’s Day. An anonymous individual complimented Brown on her “good spirit” and left her a $1,500 tip on his patty melt. He asked her to give $500 to another customer in the restaurant, and keep a thousand for herself. It’s a great story, but wait. Waffle House says that it has a policy about large tips on credit cards, and that policy is to not take them (according to Waffle House, they refuse those sorts of tips in case the customer changes his or her mind later?). They forced Brown to refund the entirety of the tip.

All was not lost, however, as the journalist sent by the Charlotte Observer to cover the story tracked down the anonymous tipper and told him what had happened. The gentleman wrote Brown a personal check for a thousand dollars, so our story has a happy ending after all …
