The group “White Lives Matter,” which recently made headlines for demonstrating outside of a Houston NAACP office with Confederate flags and assault rifles, has officially been declared a hate group. The group Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks extremist organizations, announced the designation this week.
The group recently organized a protest at the NAACP office, demanding that they denounce the group Black Lives Matter.
The Black Lives Matter movement, however, is an activist organization that seeks to eliminate racial injustice, spotlight important social issues, reform the criminal justice system, “to facilitate the types of connections necessary to encourage social action and engagement,” among other initiatives.
The White Lives Matter website is filled with racist and hateful videos and literature aimed at African-Americans, Jews, Muslims and immigrants to the United States.
In a statement, the SPLC said,
It’s unclear how much the WLM movement matters in the real world, beyond annoying most of those who see its fliers and other propaganda. But WLM activists are hard at work, doing their best to seed yet another racist concept into the consciousness of American whites as they seek to build a whites-only nation. Given the atmosphere in the United States today, that should worry all Americans.
