This is almost too beautiful and sad and amazing. Two years ago, Brenda Schmitz passed away after a battle with ovarian cancer and, just before her death, she sent a secret letter to a friend, with strict instructions that it be sent to a Des Moines radio station when her husband decided to re-marry. Well, David announced his engagement to Jane, and Star 102.5 FM—which tries every year to make a few Christmas requests come true for their listeners—received Brenda’s letter. David was invited to the studio, but was not told why.
“I have a wish for David and the boys [David and Brenda had four boys] and the woman and her family if she has kids also [Jane has two],” Brenda’s letter said. “I want them to know I love them very much and they always feel safe in a world of pain.” Brenda had three wishes for her family, all of which came true. She asked for a day of “pampering” for her husband’s new wife (“she deserves it, being a step-mother to all those boys”), a trip to Disney for her whole family and a big, catered meal for the medical team that took care of Brenda during her illness.
The radio station, with the help of several local businesses, is making it all happen. Watch the whole thing here, so long as you’ve got a box of tissues nearby …
