The Taliban’s swift takeover of Afghanistan’s capital following the U.S. military withdrawal has put hundreds of thousands at risk in the nation. At least 250,000 have been displaced since May, a number currently skyrocketing as thousands flee Taliban rule. US-backed President Ashraf Ghani fled the nation, effectively dissolving his government and ceding power.
It’s a stunning and tragic end to the U.S.’s two-decade attempt to transform Afghanistan, an end that has left at least a quarter of a million people with no home and no future prospects. At least 80 percent of those displaced are women and children.
While the U.S. points fingers and governments around the world scramble to find homes for refugees, here are some organizations already at work in Afghanistan that could use your prayers and your resources as they attempt to help those in need and stay safe. We will update this post with new links as more organizations respond to the crisis.
CARE Afghanistan
The people in CARE are providing food, water and shelter to displaced Afghan refugees. About $90 covers a month’s worth of emergency needs for one family.
The International Rescue Committee
The IRC is providing tents, food and medical care for displaced Afghan families in crisis zones.
The Join Council for the Welfare of Immigrants
The JCWI advocates for safe, legal routes for displaced refugees to find new homes.
Mercy Corps
The Mercy Corps is providing clean water and sanitation supplies to displaced families in Kabul.
Women for Women International
Women for Women International is currently matching donations made in its work in Afghanistan, where it provides education and job training for women.
It’s also important to contact your local lawmaker and tell them you support welcoming displaced Afghan refugees in your community.
