Is Trump Changing His Stance on Immigrants?

President Donald Trump seems to be toying with changing his stance on undocumented immigrants.

In his address to the joint session of Congress, he seemed to stay the course, referring to the United States as being in a state of “lawless chaos” and calling for “rule of law” at our Southern border.

However, hours earlier, speaking to reporters, Trump spoke largely about finding a compromise on an immigration bill. He said:

Real and positive immigration reform is possible. If we are guided by the well-being of American citizens, then I believe Republicans and Democrats can work together to achieve an outcome that has eluded our country for decades.

Trump’s candidacy began with him accusing undocumented immigrants from Mexico of being “rapists and murderers” and within a week of his presidency he signed an executive order that would speed up deportations, temporarily stopped the refugee program and had banned travelers from specific Muslim-majority countries. His base of supporters has supported stricter immigration reform along the lines of what Trump has spoken of.

He now seems to be considering the Dream Act, which would grant people who were brought to the country as children legal status—an act President Obama tried and failed to achieve legislatively.

Attendees to the lunch said Trump verbalized being willing to compromise on legal status for millions of undocumented people if Democrats were willing to work with him, but did not give any specific details.

Many immigration activists are not yet sold on the idea of Trump advocating for undocumented immigrants, but are waiting to see what happens.
