White Officer Charged After Shooting Unarmed Black Man, Botham Shem Jean, in His Own Home

A Dallas police officer was arrested Sunday for shooting and killing Botham Shem Jean in his home. The officer, Amber Guyger, was off duty at the time of the shooting and was charged with manslaughter.

Guyger, who is white, fatally shot Jean after claiming she entered his apartment by mistake Thursday. Jean died at a hospital later. He was 26.

The family’s attorney, S. Lee Merritt, told reporters: “We don’t need evidence beyond a reasonable doubt at this point. We need probable cause of a crime. And the existence of probable cause is clear to everyone.” (h/t CNN)

Attorneys presented prosecutors with a witness as well as video evidence of the incident. He continued: “We’re still dealing in America with black people being killed in some of the most arbitrary ways, driving while black, walking while black and now we have to add living while black.”

Jean was a risk assurance associate. He graduated from Harding University in Arkansas in 2016. Those close to him say he was “an amazing student, an amazing citizen. He loved God,” according to reports.
