Spiritual War

The classic motif with most plays, movies or even music is the battle between good and evil. Medieval morality plays showed a regular man triumph over evil. In today’s movies you have Jedi knights battling the dark side of the Force.

What about in our daily personal lives? Many of us would see ourselves individually as the good guys while most would see terrorists as the definite bad guys. But is that it? Are terrorists and the IRS the only evils we must fight?

Paul in his letter to the church at Ephesus mentioned another kind of evil and another kind of battle. “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against spiritual forces in the heavenly realms” (Ephesians 6:12). The idea that there are unseen evils we must fight seems a little crazy, but as Hamlet told Horatio, “There are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamt of in your philosophy.” Just because something is not seen does not mean that it is not there. There are many passages of the Bible that warn Christians to be alert for the powers of darkness that are not visible to our eyes (1 Peter 5:8, Ephesians 4:27). Our best weapons are prayer, asking God for His protection and the discernment to recognize the battle around us.

We should be aware of the spiritual war that is raging around us, but we should not obsess or be fearful of the darkness. C.S. Lewis said, “There are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall about devils. One is to disbelieve their existence. The other is to believe and to feel an excessive and unhealthy interest in them.” Being overly curious or overly fearful of the demonic is not healthy because it takes our focus off of Jesus. Keeping our gaze fixed on Christ and walking in His truth is the best weapon we have to fight the unseen battle.

“In order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes” (2 Corinthians 2:11).
