Ann Voskamp: Whoever Tells the Church Mothers to Go Home Are Homewreckers in Our Father’s Church

As you may have seen earlier this week, theologian John MacArthur caused a stir for his comments about Bible teacher, preacher and abuse survivor advocate Beth Moore. Asked to publicly respond to the ministry of Beth Moore, MacArthur said “Go home.” He went on to compare her to a TV jewelry salesperson, criticized the #MeToo movement and said that “the Church is caving in to women preachers.” (You can hear his full comments here.)

Now, writer Ann Voskamp has responded with a beautiful and grace-filled blog post titled, “How God Calls Women (Calls Women To Go, Because They’re Already Home in Him).”

In it, she takes an in-depth look at how the Bible esteems women and women leaders throughout the narrative of scripture. Though she adds “this is not about whether women should preach to men or have authority over men”, she has a clear reference to how destructive MacArthur’s comments are.

She writes, “Whoever tells the church mothers to go home are homewreckers in our Father’s church … It is always a lie from the pit that tells you that your gifts aren’t good enough to be given.”

She later adds, “Gatekeepers may try to send women away, but God makes women a gateway for many on the way to finding the Way.”
