Only 10 Percent of Americans Hold Basic Christian Beliefs

Within the last decade, it’s been reported that 70 percent of Americans identify as Christians. But when it comes to actually living out those beliefs, well, the percentage gets lower.

A new study out of the American Culture and Faith Institute has revealed that while 70 percent of Americans identify as Christians, only 10 percent hold basic Christian beliefs. The director of the study Barna explained to Christian Today:

Our research collected information about attitudes and behaviors related to practical matters like lying, cheating, stealing, pornography, the nature of God, and the consequences of unresolved sin.”

That’s what makes the discrepancy between the percentage of people who consider themselves to be Christian–more than seven out of every 10–and those who have a biblical worldview–just one out of every 10–so alarming.

The data was collected from more than 6,000 surveys that asked “Christian 101” questions about spiritual beliefs and actual behaviors.
