Study: Just 39% of Evangelicals Are ‘Comfortable’ With Women Pastors or Priests

The research organization Barna recently released the findings of a far-reaching study examining how Americans view women in different leadership roles.

Though the vast majority of Americans and evangelicals are comfortable with women serving in leadership roles in businesses and in political capacities, opinions about ministry are very different.

Even though 79 percent of all Americans said that they were comfortable with women leading ministry, when it comes to evangelical Christians, just 39 percent said that they were comfortable with female pastors or priests. That’s significantly lower than people who describe themselves as Protestants (71 percent), Catholics (80 percent) or simply “practicing Christians” (62 percent).
