The Leading ‘Atheist Mega-Church’ Has Just Experienced a Schism

A few months ago, we posted this story about a rising atheist mega-church called the Sunday Assemblies that had spawned dozens of congregations after first being launched in London by the comedy duo, Sanderson Jones and Pippa Evan. Now, the movement has suffered the same fate of many large Christian churches: a schism. A leading member of the Sunday Assemblies has announced that he is breaking off from the duo’s rapidly-growing church for non-believers, which he says has become “a humanistic cult,” according to CNN.

Lee Moore, the founder of the new “Godless Revival” church, accused Jones and Evan of having “a problem with atheism” by not inviting leading speakers from the atheism community to the services and even distancing themselves from the word atheism. Moore also vocally disagreed with Jones and Evan moving the location of the services from a bar to a more family friendly location. Since the criticism, Jones has reportedly banned Moore and his group of atheists followers from attending Sunday Assembly services in their home city of New York. Accusations of overbearing leadership; squabbles over service locations; ideological disputes that lead to congregation splits … Maybe Christians and atheists have more in common than everyone first thought …
