Meet Linda LeMura, the First Laywoman President of a Jesuit College

Le Moyne College in Syracuse, New York appears poised to appoint provost Linda LeMura as the school’s fourteenth president. If it happens (and a faculty email all but confirms that it will), then she will be the first laywoman to do so—no mean feat for an institution founded by St. Ignatius of Loyola back in 1540. LeMura herself seemed to suspect the job was headed her way last year, when she told a Syracuse publication called Today’s CNY Magazine that “The [church] hierarchy is predominantly male. The Jesuits, however, tend to be a little bit more progressive in their approach in terms of education and in leadership roles. I think if anyone is going to break the ceiling in terms of the Catholic hierarchy, I suspect that a Jesuit institution will be stepping up to the plate very soon” …
