Mike Todd’s visit to The Breakfast Club this morning turned into an unexpected theology lesson. The Transformation Church (Tulsa, Oklahoma) pastor sat down with Charlamagne Tha God for a candid conversation about sin, grace and what people misunderstand about Jesus’ sacrifice.
“I believe in Jesus and I believe he was sent here to show us the best example of what we can be,” Charlamagne said. “The thing I have a problem with is us as humans — acting like we have unlimited sins because of the sacrifice Jesus made. Why don’t we strive to be the best versions of ourselves the way he did?”
Todd didn’t hesitate.
“The truth of the matter is people don’t understand the cost of what Christ did for everybody,” he said. “Because if you understood the cost, you wouldn’t treat it so cheap.”
He explained that for many people, Jesus’ death has become more of a distant story than a living reality.
“It’s a fictional story for most people — being scourged, beaten and laid on a cross,” he said. “And while he’s on that cross, he looks over at a thief and says, ‘Today, if you believe in me, you’ll be in paradise.’ Even in his death, he’s showing love to someone who was a sinner.”
Todd went on to compare that misunderstanding to how people only recognize the cost of their choices once it’s too late, arguing that we tend to “romanticize sin” because we don’t understand the weight of what it truly costs.
“That’s why there’s a scripture in Galatians that talks about this,” Todd said. “So now that we’ve received this beautiful grace, do we keep going on in sin? Of course not. We’ve got to change in our conduct and our love. That’s why the fruit of the Spirit should be love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness and self-control. That’s what we’re actually supposed to be displaying.”
Charlamagne cut in, saying, “The best form of repentance is changed behavior.”
Todd agreed.
“Repent isn’t a church word — it just means to turn,” he said. “A lot of people say sorry, but they don’t turn. You don’t really repent until you go a different direction. And that’s where what you’re seeing the change in behavior. That’s really the modification we all have to make to actually line up with the plan and the will of God for all of our lives.”
As it turns out, you don’t need a viral gimmick or spit take to make a point — just Biblical truth.
