Not only does Pope Francis have some really compelling ideas about serving the poor, he also, evidently, has a pretty good understanding of Internet culture. In a statement, Pope Francis said that the technology “is something truly good, a gift from God,” but noted it can have negative social consequences as well: “The desire for digital connectivity can have the effect of isolating us from our neighbors, from those closest to us.” His most noteworthy thoughts about the Internet however, was his advice to fellow Christians about basic online etiquette.
To (have a) dialogue means to believe that the ‘other’ has something worthwhile to say, and to entertain his or her point of view and perspective. Engaging in dialogue does not mean renouncing our own ideas and traditions, but the pretense that they alone are valid and absolute … May the light we bring to others not be the result of cosmetics or special effects, but rather of our being loving and merciful neighbors to those wounded and left on the side of the road.
Look at any Facebook thread about a hot-button political issue or the comments below a divisive online article, and it’s clear that the Pope seems to know what he’s talking about …
