Report: Pope Francis Is Going to Change the Lord’s Prayer

The Vatican may soon approve changes to one of the world’s best-known prayers.

The Italian Episcopal Conference has reportedly sent changes to the Vatican, which they seem likely to approve, to change the line “lead us not into temptation” in the Lord’s Prayer to read “abandon us not when in temptation.”

The prayer appears in both the books of Matthew and Luke, the most-recited version coming from Matthew 6:9-13.

Jesus tells His followers “This, then, is how you should pray,” and recites the famous prayer.

During an interview with Ansa, the pope reportedly disputed the translation of the phrase, “lead us not into temptation” saying, “A father doesn’t do that, a father helps you to get up immediately. It’s Satan who leads us into temptation, that’s his department.”

As Hello Christian notes, Pope Francis isn’t the only theologian that has issues with the translation. The late Charles Spurgeon said, “God tempts no man. For God to tempt in the sense of enticing to sin [is] inconsistent with his nature, and altogether contrary to his known character; but for God to lead us into those conflicts with evil which we call temptations, is not only possible, but usual.”

Spurgeon suggested that “temptation” actually meant facing some sort of trial.
